A wonderful story! Definitely a must read book for younger generation who have no idea how hard it was to live in a communist country after the war. The way the author writes is very straight forward and the story flows well. Being a Vietnamese myself I didn't know all the terrible things the Communist did to the people in South Vietnam. First, because I didn't grow up during that time. Second, the school in Vietnam didn't teach us any bad things that Communists did. This book gave me a much better understanding of Communism, the Vietnamese people, the hard working ethics and especially the male dominant society. My American husband read it as well and couldn't put it down. He read it in three days. He said it gave him a better understanding of where I come from and what my family went through during those times. Plus he was glad to see the effects of the war through the other side. He gained a greater appreciation of the Vietnamese spirit from this book. Wonderful read for all.

It's rare that you find a memoir that not only tells a story well, but puts you in the first person as the author. I read often and some books are a struggle...not this one. This story is amazing. You'll feel sorrow and joy for the author with the deepest sense of empathy. I dare you to find a better read.
This is a story of triumph over adversity. I loved the account of her life in Vietnam under the Communist regime. So many wonderful moments. The story is so compelling, that I simply had to keep reading. Amy is an amazing person!
A poignant story about hardships and perseverance of one incredible person. After every challenge life threw at her, she managed to endure and survive. Amy Lien Sperbeck wrote from her heart in a straightforward language and the result is captivating. The reader is transported into her world, saw what she saw and felt what she felt. This story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and a reminder that there is always hope. This book is simply a must read, with history and life lessons embedded in it and I thank the author for sharing her story.
The human spirit can be weakened, but it can never be defeated! This is how I felt after I finished reading the Journey of the Half. I find this memoir by Amy Lien Sperbeck to be courageous, honestly written, and most of all very inspirational in so many ways. This book is an easy read and the author was able to paint a powerful and compelling picture of memorable events while growing up in a very hostile and unforgiving society that was not acceptable of her kind. Through her story telling I was able to feel her fears, disappointments, aspirations, and conflict. I admire her strength of character and determination in her pursuit to come to America to provide a better life for her and her family. I really enjoyed reading this book and I highly recommend it to everyone.
I personally know the author or else I would have missed this amazing book. I never read biographies but I wanted to find out why this unassuming kind woman felt like she wanted to share her life with us. I could not put it down. Hers is an amazing story of perseverance in the face of hard times during the pull out of the US from Vietnam. No politics here, just the struggle to survive. And when people struggle, the last thing you want is to stand out as different. The recurring theme is that as long as you have family and friends you can overcome anything and even when these relationships strain the bonds just bend but don't break.
Highly recommended to young people living in the US who think life is hard because their iPhone broke.
